Unraveling the Synergy of TPACK and Waygrounds Gamification: Innovative Strategies in Enhancing Students’ Mathematics Motivation and Understanding

Abstract


This study examines the integration of the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) framework and gamification in mathematics education, specifically through the Wayground platform. The appropriate use of information technology can encourage students to be more creative and adaptive to changing times. Gamification has been shown to enhance motivation, engagement, and academic performance through elements such as points, badges, and leaderboards; however, its effectiveness depends heavily on design and contextual suitability. Within the TPACK framework, teachers are expected to integrate content knowledge, pedagogy, and technology synergistically. Various studies highlight that the implementation of TPACK can improve numeracy skills and student learning outcomes. The use of Wayground supports aspects of technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK) and technological content knowledge (TCK), enabling real-time assessment of student understanding and presenting abstract mathematical concepts in engaging ways. Overall, the literature supports the potential of combining TPACK and gamification as an effective instructional strategy. This study employed a systematic desk review approach, conducting a structured and critical analysis of relevant academic sources. Nevertheless, more diverse methodological approaches and continuous evaluation are required to ensure successful implementation across different educational contexts. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic analysis linking the TPACK framework with Wayground-based gamification, offering a new perspective on how their integration can strengthen students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics through active, interactive, and technology-driven learning experiences. The implication is that teachers need training and mentoring to design more contextual and meaningful learning, while ongoing evaluation is essential to guarantee effectiveness across varied educational settings.
