Problem-Based Learning with Gallery Walk Oriented to Improve Student's Communication Skills on Ecology and Biodiversity Topics
Abstract
In the 21st century, learning encompasses not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but also the development of skills that are relevant and applicable in this era. One of the skills is communication skills. The purpose of this research is to see the effect of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with the Gallery Walk on students' communication skills. This method used the pre-experimental with the One-Group Pretest-Posttest and the Communication Skill Scale (CSS) questionnaire instrument. This research was conducted in one of the schools in Bandung City, Indonesia. The subjects were 30 seventh-grade students consisting of 15 boys and 15 girls. The results showed a significant increase with an average pretest of 67% and an average post-test of 70%. The results paired-sample T-test, the two-tailed test yielded a p-value of 0.006, which is less than the 0.05 significance level. This indicates that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) supporting PBL with Gallery Walk affects improving students' communication skills. The overall N-Gain score was 0.08, with the dimensions of competency, discouragement, body language, and dignity scoring 0.14, 0.03, 0.036, and -0.15, respectively. The results indicate that PBL learning with a gallery walk may be an effective alternative for improving students' communication skills.
