PENDIDIKAN MULTIKULTURAL DAN PENGAJARAN BAHASA ASING
Abstract

MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION. Indonesians believe that the foundations of multicultural education have been set by the founding fathers of the nation particularly through the preservation of both regional and national languages. In the wave of language contact with foreign languages, the concept of multicultural itself apparently needs to be redefined. This writing views the importance of foreign language instruction perspective in redefining the phenomenon of multicultural education. The basic assumption explored is that language is not monolthic since it contains the history, culture, and knowledge of a society. When two languages contact, be it regional or national level, cross-cultural competencies are needed in order to appreciate the differences between the cultures. The failure in understanding the existing differences commonly leads to conflict. Specifically, this writing discusses the influence spectrum of language contact, language and culture ambivalence, cross-cultural competency in foreign language instruction, and relationship between the foreign language instruction and multicultural education.
